In older sci-fi movies, we can see that people imagined using only a display (a flat screen with moving images) for all kinds of activities in the future. This idea is no longer just the stuff of spaceship movies; it is slowly becoming a reality. Companies are launching bezel-less phones onto the market. Users can then enjoy flawless display quality without distracting bezels.
Each company has adopted this trend in its own way and solved the problems that come with a phone whose front consists solely of a display. The main challenge is that a phone needs a speaker for calls, a front-facing camera, and sensors.
In this article, I’ve selected a few phones for you that follow these trends and have addressed these challenges in their own way.
Xiaomi Mi Mix
The Chinese phone manufacturer did not disappoint with this model. Released in 2016, the phone was a pioneer in the trend of bezel-less phones. However, this comes with a high price tag. When the phone was released in China, it cost over twenty thousand crowns.
Xiaomi solved the problem with the camera, sensors, and speakers in its own unique way. It placed the camera on the bottom bezel of the phone (you rotate the phone when you want to take a photo), placed the sensors under the display, and completely eliminated the speaker for calls. Instead, it placed a vibration speaker under the display, which transmits vibrations through the phone instead of sound.
Samsung Galaxy S8
This phone from last year calls its display the “infinity display.” In my opinion, it truly lives up to that name, as it has minimized the bezels, removed the home button, and replaced it with software buttons. This beautiful effect is complemented by a gently curved display on the sides.
iPhone X (10)
This smartphone is one of the most expensive phones you can buy. But for that price, you get true quality. The Super AMOLED display shows beautiful colors and sharp details. Plus, the display covers the entire front of the phone, except for a single “notch” at the top. That’s where all the necessary elements are located.
